Norman Hasted: Osler’s first EVAR patient
A routine visit to his doctor led Norman Hasted to make history at Osler. During his visit, Norman learned he had a large aneurysm – or bulge – in his aorta, a life-threatening condition affecting the body’s main artery. He was referred to Dr. Varun Kapila, Chief of Osler’s Division of Vascular Surgery and, in September, he became the first patient to receive an endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) at Osler.
Traditionally, repairing an aortic aneurysm required major abdominal surgery and a lengthy hospital stay. However, with this state-of-the-art EVAR procedure, a multidisciplinary team was able to repair Norman’s aorta from the inside with only a few small cuts, drastically shortening Norman’s recovery time in hospital. In fact, he was relaxing and recovering in the comfort of his own home within 24 hours!
With the addition of EVAR to Osler’s surgical program, patients like Norman no longer have to travel outside the community to receive this life-saving procedure. Yet another example of how Osler is bringing innovative, high-quality care closer to home.
